COMMUNITY NEWS

  • PARC opened its new facility Tuesday, Dec. 3 at 413 SW 6th Ave, offering daytime support to adults experiencing homelessness through creative classes, social connection, and community tours. The three-times larger space, built with about $1.7 million in renovation costs, doubles daily attendance and collaborates with local agencies for support.  Amarillo Globe-News
  • Santa is set to attend local holiday events in Amarillo: on Saturday, Dec. 6 at the Amarillo Police Department’s Christmas tree decorating event with activities and picture opportunities (bring your own camera) and on Sunday, Dec. 7 at the Khiva Shrine, where he will greet children.  Amarillo Tribune
  • Today at The Lumberyard in Canyon, parents can join a holiday wrapping event from 5-9 p.m. where they wrap presents, sip cocoa from Yellow City Grind & enjoy Chick-fil-A treats while donating a new toy to local nonprofits.  NewsTalk 940 AM
  • Today, Amarillo Animal Management and Welfare is waiving cat adoption fees at its shelter through Dec. 13, covering spay/neuter, vaccines, and microchipping to boost pet adoptions in the community.  ABC 7 Amarillo

  • The Amarillo Performing Arts Center will present its reimagined production, The Nutcracker: Amarillo Dreamin’ (featuring a West Texas twist and over 50 local dancers) this weekend at Globe News Center for the Performing Arts with shows on Dec. 6 and 7 at 6:30 p.m.  NewsChannel 10
  • Candy Cane Lane launched its fifth annual snowball fight between Santa and the Grinch on Thanksgiving night at the 7100 block of Gainsborough Road, drawing families to enjoy festive lights and decor; the display remains open each night through Christmas.  Amarillo Globe-News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • At the Amarillo Farm & Ranch Show, agricultural producers and state senator Charles Perry discussed plans to manage water resources amid rising industrial and irrigation demands. The forum at the Civic Center Complex highlighted concerns over future groundwater shortages for the region.  ABC 7 Amarillo

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board recommended that the City Council move ahead with leasing the zoo to Wild West Wildlife Rehabilitation Center and expressed optimism about selling Wonderland Park + developing unused land in John Stiff Park for commercial use. The Council is set to review the recommendations Tuesday, Dec. 9.  ABC 7 Amarillo

HEALTH NEWS

  • Harrington Cancer & Health Foundation provides free transportation, a $3,000 grant, and free wigs to help cancer patients and families manage treatment costs and emotional challenges in Amarillo. Director Ryan Parnell said the services include counseling and dietary guidance (all at no cost) to smooth the journey.  ABC 7 Amarillo
