COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Advocate Lacey Epperson calls on Amarillo residents to support the unhoused by improving access to health care and shelter services (she stresses that overcoming stigma and complacency is key to helping those with pressing needs today).  NewsChannel 10
  • Transformation Park opened in April to provide safe shelter for people experiencing homelessness with critical health needs. The shelter offers meals, clean water, and hygiene facilities (a basic service) while partnering with local groups to improve access to medical care.  NewsChannel 10

  • Don Harrington Discovery Center hosts Parents’ Night Out with an Arctic Explorer theme that includes a holiday show, Let It Snow, and winter science activities for kids (ages 4-11).   • Grant Fithen, owner of Loud and Heavy Booking and 2025 award-winning Booking Agent, works to grow Amarillo’s music scene by booking local bands and providing music lessons at Space Camp Studios. He aims to help artists build their careers and connect across genres.  Amarillo Tribune

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Amarillo ended 2025 with strong job growth as the labor force increased by 1,600 and hourly wages averaged just over $25. The unemployment rate remained low at 3.2% and businesses plan to hire more workers after layoffs while upcoming data centers promise major growth in 2026.  ABC 7 Amarillo

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Officials at the Pantex Plant near Amarillo marked the final production milestone for the W88 Alt 370 nuclear warhead on Tuesday, Dec. 16, during a ceremony attended by NNSA Administrator Brandon Williams and local stakeholders.   • A Potter County judge ruled that Sharpened Iron Studios must leave Amarillo College immediately and pay $13,476 in attorney fees + $158.20 in court fees, based on motions and evidence. All counterclaims against the college were denied.  NewsChannel 10
  • Texas A&M AgriLife Extension hosted a risk seminar on Wednesday in the Panhandle and parts of Lubbock where ag producers earned 8 CEUs while learning about screwworm risks in cattle; USDA+ Texas Animal Health Commission plan to release a response strategy in a few months to guard the beef industry.  ABC 7 Amarillo

HEALTH NEWS

  • Wildlife experts report a rise in avian influenza among wild birds as colder weather settles across the Panhandle; cases include geese, a red-tailed hawk, and great horned owls. They advise residents to contact professionals before handling sick birds (to reduce exposure risk).  NewsChannel 10
  • Registered nurse Abby Reed explained how her medical mission trip led her to serve the homeless, who often miss basic care due to paperwork and lack of resources.   • A new wide-scale housing project called Rock Ridge will break ground in January in Potter County, creating 1,150 affordable homes ranging from two-bedroom cottages to three-to-five-bedroom styles.
